Full Version: The New Way Of Avb's Mixing Is Pretty Annoying
Armin van Buuren Official Forum > Topics > A State of Trance - the radioshow
Edwin Knoppert
I heard it on Armin's only (live in Holland), then on ASOT350 and now ASOT351 (at ~31:00 minutes) as well.

He excludes all bass briefly and then right on the mix he turns it back on.
If you do this once or twice.. fine..
But it's imo a poor way of mixing and just want to state that's an annoying way to mix tracks.

He did not do this before and it seems a new gadget.
Armin does not need this, i know because i barely ever heard flawed mixing from him.

Umm, it sounds fine?
And yes hes done it before, and alot of DJs do it, its a common technique for songs that have a melody as the intro.

very uncritical of you rolleyes.gif

I've noticed him doing this a lot too - its not the smooth mixing he used to do back in 04 - like on Universal Religion 04. To be honest, that was really impressive.
I dont mind too much about him slamming the tunes in like he does now - the main thing is that he always keeps the energy levels high, and thats all that really matters to me when I'm clubbing.

To be honest I haven't noticed, that shows how much I focus on actual mix unsure.gif
I just hope this isn't due to his ever shorter sets.
Tracklist is where it's at for me, if he does that right then I'm happy.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. Reducing the bass on the incoming track and turning it up at the point where the new track takes over in the transition is as standard procedure as it comes. Every DJ does that. It hides slight beat mismatches plus it prevents the bass from becoming too booming and muddy. But maybe you mean something else?

What I didn't like was the overflow of sound effects that he was applying during his set at The Sand last year December. But he stopped doing that rather quickly. The only things I really don't like about Armin's sets atm are the endless repetition of beaten to death tracks (Till the sky falls down, Great escape and the likes) and the dick head MC. But other than that I'm a happy customer.

I liked that lol
Now that was noticeable.

In this case it's not the same, it is being used as you describe but als just for creating 'a sound' randomly.

It's also not only excluding bass but he has enhanced other frequencies as well.. just to create that effect.
Like i said, a few times is fine but it's now kind of boring.

I think it sounds great, as many successful DJ'S do this technique including Armin! I think it sounds great though over all.

i haven't noticed any thing wrong with the mixing except for that kind of "storm-like or shhhhhhheeeeeeeesssssshhhhhhh" noise that comes before a new track comes into play during the show

if that what you're talking about it does sound disturbing but i'm used to it

I couldn't really notice at 31min. maybe because my 'sound system' is shit.
But at 40:40 and later at 41:20 between

07. Signalrunners pres. Syndica - Modes [Fraction]
08. Mike Foyle - Pandora (The Blizzard Remix) [Armind]

you can hear when tunes just switched over on fly, I think it went incrediby smooth all things considered,
but more to the point at 41:20 which is I'm guessing what you're refering to as dropping down the bass,
I actually find it quite stimulating, in other words I like it, I guess it's just me, maybe it's bit cheesy
but as said if everything goes as seemless as he can do as well ironically you don't even notice the mix.
Edwin Knoppert
I think we hear the same but at that point it isn't so bad.
Though in 350 it's all over, and it's really to often used.
In 351 only 2 or 3 times.
This is just overused thing imo.

You wouldn't say that if you lived in UK.
Anyway as I said if used well, this builds up momentum, it's like a rollercoaster mixing.

Armin has been mixing like this for a while now, he didn't used to much, not a few years ago anyway.

I agree with Edwin though, 1-2 times in a set is ok, but to over use this style of mixing is really lame. I wish Armin would cut it out as well.

in the state of trance ibiza armin does something like cool in the AVB MASHUP transition heard if you can -->
Transition -->
16. Orjan Nilsen vs Russell G - La Guitarra's Whiplash (Armin Van Buuren Mashup)
17. Filterheadz vs Eric Prydz - A Day Without Pjanoo (Armin Van Buuren Mashup)
